Expand Your Imagination for Italian Food

When people think of Italian foods, their imaginations are often limited to pizza and pasta – the old standbys. The reality is that the country is filled with regions and villages and each of these have their own specialty dishes. Yes, pasta dishes and pizzas do exist in Italy, but that makes up a small portion of what the true cuisine is all about.

Even if you don’t live in Italy, you can taste some of the foods in your local restaurants. Spend some time talking to the people who work there. Get a feel for the area of Italy where they came from. Ask them if they serve any regional specialties on the menu. Then, order it and see what you think.

After you taste test some of the foods, your next step is to learn how to cook it. Each family and each restaurant has their own way of preparing something and you can learn from them.

Take a Culinary Tour of Italy

Are you fascinated by Italian food? Then what better place is there to learn about than the country itself? Though Italy is not the largest of countries, the differences in the cuisine from region to region could take a lifetime to study.

There are plenty of tour companies that will set up trips that will give you an overview of the cuisine in each region. They know exactly where to go to get the best foods. You can take three kinds of vacations. You can sample the food and wine, learn how to cook the food, or do a combination of both.

Another fun way to learn how to cook in Italy is to stay with a family in a region that fascinates you and have them teach you their signature dishes. In the Italian culture, as with any culture, knowledge is usually handed down through the generations and it is a wonderful thing to be part of that legacy.

Experiment with Italian Flavours

Even if you don’t want to cook Italian food every night, you can still let the typical Italian flavours influence some of the things that you want to cook. For example, Italians tend to use certain spices such as basil and oregano. They also use anise in their baking. Those are just some of the examples.

Think about the things you like the best about Italian food and apply them to your everyday cooking. Do you like the way Italians make their vinaigrette’s? Learn how to make them and find creative ways to use them. There are a lot of different things you can do that will help bring your other cooking some variety.

You may also want to learn about the flavour preferences of different regions of Italy. Different regions often use different ingredients. If you learn about them you will be closer to giving your diet even more variety.

Searching for Authentic Italian Food

In some parts of the world such as in the United States, much of the Italian food that is served in restaurants comes from a particular region. That is why most of us think of Italian food as spaghetti, marinara sauce, and pizza. Certain regions of Italy focus on those foods.

If you live in a country where the Italian food selection may be limited, you may need to dig a little bit to find authentic Italian food. Or better yet, you can make your own Italian cuisine. The internet makes it easier than ever to find the recipes that you want.

You can also buy a cookbook that has a certain region as the focus. Then, after you try a few of the recipes you can move on to a different region. The goal is to sample foods from the different areas of Italy, even if you’ve never been there.
